Chiang Kai-Shek memorial Hall
Chiang Kai Shek memorial hall/park changed its name to Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall
There were bitter fights about this decision but for most visitors it's anyway more a park than a political statement of any kind. If you're the first time in Taipei you'll most likely come to Taipei main station. From here Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall (C.K.S memorial-hall)is only about 10 minutes on foot.
What makes the park interesting as a recreational location is not too much the political issue, more it is the confined space away from city traffic and city noise. Surrounded by a hallway type of wall Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall can be a nice place to hang out on rainy days as well. Many elderly Taipei citizens use it to meet with friends, ply their local instruments and/or sing together.
There are currently voices who want the wall to be torn down. However, there are several reasons why this should not happen.
First): A park in the center of a city with growing real estate prises is in danger of getting sliced piece by piece. People will not have a “geographic consciousness”. If someone hacks into the wall everyone will notice it and most likely complain (demo)
Second): the park is protected against noise pollution.
Third) it serves its function on rainy days.
Just my opinion.
