It depends a little on your student's age.
For younger students you could play a game.

Have them stage a situation. Whenever slang is used the responding player will pull a card, either "slang" or "literally".

A: I can't stand you any longer. Go and hit the road.
B: pulls card and gets literally. He will have to hit a road.
    Pulls card and gets Slang. He will give an appropriate response.
