Some books or literature on the material handling machinery mentioned the electric chain hoists is limited in term of lifting height, not suitable for larger lifting height material handling. In fact, the electric chain hoists is particularly suitable for higher lifting material handling.

Our crane manufacturer company has many times contracted to offer the jib crane for large shipyard gantry crane, which is installed on the main beam of shipyard crane. The cantilever jib crane is 5t, the lifting height is 10m, and the cantilever length is 12m. The original drawing required is a wire rope hoist with the lifting capacity of 5t, the lifting speed of 8m/min, and the lifting height of 80m (the lifting height of the cantilever jib crane is 10m, and the lifting height of the gantry crane is 70m). The length of the electric wire rope hoist is 2.98m, the dead weight is 1.6t, and the effective stroke of the rope hoist on the spiral arm is only 6.8m.

After discussion, the electric chain hoists was selected with the same specification on lifting capacity, lifting speed and lifting height required on the above cantilever jib crane, but the length of the chain hoist is only 0.43m and the dead weight is 0.65t. The effective stroke of the electric chain hoist on the jib arm is 11.5m, which is 4.7m longer than the effective stroke of the wire rope electric hoist.

Some said the electric chain hoists lifting speed is slow. The development of electric chain hoists in China is far behand the boom of electric wire rope electric hoists. At the initial development period, the electric chain hoists was produced by simply installing a motor on the hand chain hoists by some hoist manufacturers.
