Batman blockiert Zufahrtstraße zum Londoner Flughafen Heathrow

19:56 15/08/2008

LONDON, 15. August (RIA Novosti).

Batman protester sparks motorway delays

Posted Fri Aug 15, 2008 9:33pm AEST

Drivers faced long delays on one of Britain's busiest motorways after a fathers' rights protester dressed as Batman climbed onto a gantry.

A Highways Agency spokesman said three of the six M25 anti-clockwise lanes were closed in the area around the gantry between junctions 14 and 15 near Heathrow Airport.

"Traffic has slowed down back to junction 17, but it is still moving," a spokesman said. "It is slower than normal."

All the lanes on the clockwise section of the motorway remained open, although a 40mph speed limit was in place. The agency reported delays of 90 minutes in the area.

Fathers 4 Justice, which stages high-profile stunts to campaign for divorced fathers to have greater access to their children, said the protester is thought to be one of its members.

In a statement, the group said the man, aged 48, from Farnborough, Hampshire, has not seen his eight-year-old daughter for a year.

Live television pictures showed the man standing on a gantry above the motorway next to a sign for Heathrow Airport as police watched from below.

He told Sky News by telephone that he had simply climbed up a ladder at the side of the gantry.

The stretch of motorway is close to the M4 junction and a few miles from the M3. It is one of the busiest stretches of road in the country.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers were on the scene, but would not say what action they planned to take.

It is the latest in a series of stunts apparently organised by Fathers 4 Justice. Last month, two protesters climbed onto the roof of Labour Deputy Leader Harriet Harman's London home.

Campaigners have also climbed to the top of St Paul's Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace.

In 2004, protesters threw flour-filled condoms at then-Prime Minister Tony Blair in the House of Commons.

Fathers 4 Justice motorway protest causes 10 mile tailbacks into Heathrow
A Fathers 4 Justice campaigner brought rush-hour traffic to a standstill by climbing a motorway gantry dressed as batman.

A Fathers 4 Justice protester has forced the closure of one of Britain's busiest roads, by climbing onto an M25 gantry dressed as Batman. ; http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1488655367/bctid1731938214 http://www.brightcove.com/channel.jsp?channel=1139053637

Geoffrey Hibbert, 48, began his protest at 7am between junctions 14 and 15 of the M25, claiming he had not seen his daughter since last summer.

The computer engineer unfurled a Fathers 4 Justice banner and displayed pictures of his eight-year-old daughter from the sign over the anti-clockwise carriageway, forcing police to close the motorway.

The blockage brought rush hour traffic to a standstill, causings 10 mile tailbacks and delaying people travelling to Heathrow Airport.

Ron Reed, a friend of Mr Hibert, said: "I've just spoken to him, he's okay and he's doing it for his daughter.

"He's been driven to desperation, he's been through all the courts to get access to his daughter and it's cost him £27,000.

"He last saw her in August last year and he's only spoken to her once.

"The courts are so geared to the mother, the father gets no justice and that means the kids don't get justice."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We were alerted at 7am to a man on the gantry of the M25 near junction 14 at Hillingdon.

"The clockwise carriageway is open as normal but the anti-clockwise carriageway is open with lane closures.

"We don't negotiate with people in these circumstance but will endeavour to speak to the man and encourage him to come down safely given the position he is in."

Mr Hibbett was arrested after climbing down from a gantry over the M25.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said that the protest ended around 4pm when the man voluntarily came down.

Mr Hibbett was arrested on suspicion of causing danger to road users and putting articles on or over the road.

“The man came down of his own accord,” he said.

“He was arrested by officers at the scene on suspicion of causing danger to road users and putting articles on or over the road.

“He has been taken to a West London Police Station where he is being questioned by police.

“We do not know at this stage whether he came down because he was bored or cold.”

A spokesman for the Highways Agency confirmed that all lanes of the M25 had now been reopened but that lengthy delays remained.

Geoffrey Hibbert, dressed as Batman on the M25

A Fathers 4 Justice campaigner dressed as Batman caused lengthy queues on the M25 around London before being arrested just before the evening rush.

Geoffrey Hibbert, 48, of Farnborough in Hampshire, spent seven hours on a gantry near Heathrow Airport.

He came down from his perch at Junction 14 on the road to Terminal 5 just after 1600 BST.

Police said despite the massive traffic disruption on the motorway, the man had the right to protest peacefully.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said that despite queues that stretched for 19km (12 miles) on the M25 and 32km (20 miles) on the M4, the decision to allow the man to stay on the gantry all day was made by the senior officer at the scene.

"He has the right to protest peacefully. It is entirely a matter for the senior officer," she said.

Police had initially said the protest caused no tailbacks or lane closures.

'Protest all day'

A Highway Agency spokesman said: "We had delays at one point of 94 minutes and we did our utmost to get the message out to the public to get people to take alternate routes."

The agency received permission from police to reopen two of four lanes on the motorway a couple of hours after the protest began shortly after 0800 BST.

Speaking by mobile telephone, Mr Hibbert told the BBC: "I'm doing this for my daughter. I'll do my protest all day."

Fathers 4 Justice protesters have staged a series of high-profile stunts across the UK, normally involving clambering on to a landmark dressed as superheroes such as Batman, Spiderman or Superman.

They are calling for more rights for fathers affected by issues involving access to their children after divorce.

Fathers 4 Justice 'Batman' Stops Traffic
A Father 4 Justice protestor has stopped traffic in his bid to raise the profile of the civil rights' group.

Geoff Hibbert, dressed as Batman, used a ladder to climb onto a gantry above the M25 motorway between junctions 14 and 15.

Mr Hibbert told Sky News that he will "try and stay here all day but the police are going to try and remove me".

He added that the police have been "very, very good about it, very supportive".

The campaigner said that he was "doing this for my daughter" and "I'll do my protest all day".

Mr Hibbert, from Farnborough, Hants, unfurled a Fathers 4 Justice banner and displayed pictures of his eight-year-old daughter.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "We were alerted at 7am by a man on the gantry of the M25 near junction 14 at Hillingdon.

"We don't negotiate with people in these circumstances but will endeavour to speak to the man and encourage him to come down safely given the position that he is in."

Holidaymakers heading for Heathrow were among those hit by the rush hour stunt on one of Britian's busiest roads.

The affected section is on the anti-clockwise carriageway near the M4 turn-off for Heathrow.

Traffic is now queuing back to junction 18 at Chorleywood causing a tailback as long as 15 miles.

The Highways Agency is warning drivers to expect delays of up to an hour and a half.

Fathers 4 Justice, which has the slogan 'A Father is for life, not just conception' was formed in 2002 to campaign for improved father's rights in the family courts and improve access to children after a divorce or separation.

Campaigners regularly dress up in superhero costumes.
