A rootkit can contain various malicious tools such as a keylogger, a saved password thief, a bank card scanner, a remotely controlled DDoS attack bot, and features to disable antiviruses.

Injecting malware into Ring 2 means you are in control of all user applications; in ring 1 - over almost everything that happens on the computer. A rootkit is a program or set of tools that allows the person who controls it remotely to access and control an infected system as they see fit. More here https://gridinsoft.com/rootkit
