Political and business elites in Honduras are involved in a violent crackdown against scores of environmental activists, according to anti-corruption group Global Witness.

In a new report on Tuesday, the watchdog said more than 120 Honduran activists have been killed since 2010 while trying to protect their rivers, forests or land. This makes the Central American country the deadliest per capita in the world for land and environmental defenders.

Global Witness claimed the killings are driven by influential political and business figures imposing mining, agribusiness and hydroelectric projects on rural communities.

For 2016, the U.S. government approved $750 million USD for the Alliance for Prosperity (AfP) for the Northern Triangle countries – Honduras being one. Despite widespread and well-documented violations of basic human rights, rampant impunity, total lack of confidence in the judiciary and state security forces, the U.S. has simply continued its decades-long policy of imperialism, neoliberalism, and militarization in Honduras. The only thing that has changed with the U.S.’s support this year is the plan’s name.

As Canadian investors gradually take over lands in Honduras’ Trujillo Bay for tourism and real estate projects, Afro-Indigenous Garifuna communities along this stretch of Caribbean coastline are being displaced.

A new cruise ship port is now open for business in Trujillo, a town of just over 10,000 about 400 kilometres north of the Honduran capital. Rio Negro, a Garifuna community, was largely displaced under threat of forced expropriation to make way for the project. Sixteen kilometres to the west, the Garifuna community of Guadalupe is now bordered by Alta Vista, one of Canadian investor Randy Jorgensen’s several residential development projects marketed to Canadian snowbirds.

Canada’s Controversial Engagement in Honduras

Since Hurricane Mitch struck Honduras in 1998, Canada has cast an increasingly long shadow over the small Central American country’s economy and policy; a presence that has grown stronger since Honduras’ controversial 2009 coup. The self-proclaimed peacekeepers have since built a stronghold over Honduras via investment in industries and support for the illegitimate government created in the wake of the coup. Canada’s relationship with Honduras is emblematic of its shifting position within the international community, as an imperial presence, establishing and expanding industries in the less developed country at the expense of local citizens and the environment.

Indigenous Rights Under Attack: Canadian economic and political interests over human rights

No one defending their land and territory in Honduras is safe. That was the message that rang loud and clear after Berta Cáceres was murdered in her home on March 3. Cáceres, an Indigenous Lenca woman, mother and grandmother was founder of the National Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), and worked tirelessly to protect communities at risk of eviction and relocation because of large scale projects that put their lives and livelihoods at risk. Despite being internationally recognized, most recently after winning the 2015 Goldman Prize, Berta was killed in her home by unknown gunmen. Her Mexican friend and colleague, Gustavo Castro, founder and director of Chiapas-based Otros Mundos (Other Worlds/Friends of the Earth Mexico), was also wounded in the attack. At the time of her murder, Berta was the beneficiary of precautionary measures ordered by the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights – an order with which the Honduran State did not comply.

Am Mittwoch ist in Honduras die Leiche der Aktivistin Lesbia Yaneth Urquía Urquía auf einer Müllhalde in der Nähe der Kleinstadt Marcala im Verwaltungsbezirk La Paz gefunden worden. Die 49-jährige Gemeindeaktivistin, die seit 2009 im Zivilen Rat der Indigenen und Volksorganisationen (COPINH) organisiert war, galt seit dem Vortag als verschwunden.

While the identities of the killers remain unknown, activists, media observers, and members of the Cáceres family are blaming the increasingly reactionary and violent Honduran government.

The authorities had frequently clashed with Cáceres over her high-profile campaign to stop land grabbing and mining while defending the rights of indigenous peoples.

While Cáceres’ death and the outcry of grief over it did draw some mainstream U.S. media coverage, there was a glaring problem with it: Hardly any of the articles mentioned that the brutal regime that probably killed Cáceres came to power in a U.S.-backed coup.

Morde an Aktivisten bringen Regierung des zentralamerikanischen Landes in Bedrängnis. Deutscher Investor hält an Projekt fest

Die niederländische Entwicklungsbank (FMO) hat heute den sofortigen Stopp aller entwicklungspolitischen Projekte in Honduras bekanntgegeben. Das Finanzinstitut reagierte damit auf die Ermordung von zwei Umwelt- und Menschenrechtsaktivisten. Auch das finnischen Finanzinstitut für Entwicklungsfinanzierung, Finnfund, stellte die Zusammenarbeit mit der Regierung des zentralamerikanischen Landes ein.

Vor allem die Ermordung der auch außerhalb des Landes bekannten Umwelt- und Menschenrechtsaktivistin Berta Cáceres in der Nacht vom 2. auf den 3. März hatte international für Empörung gesorgt. Die Vorsitzende der Menschenrechtsorganisation COPINH war in ihrer Wohnung ermordet worden. Unbekannte Täter drangen in die Privaträume ein und erschossen Cáceres. Nur knapp zwei Wochen später wurde nun COPINH-Mitglied Nelson García erschossen. García starb durch die Schüsse Unbekannter Nahe eines Ortes, an dem die Polizei im Zuge eines Landkonfliktes 150 Familien gewaltsam vertrieb.

Does Bernie Sanders know what Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama did to Honduras? Does he care? Last week saw yet another savage murder of a Honduran activist for democracy -- one of hundreds such atrocities since Clinton and Obama blessed a brutal oligarchical coup there in 2009. But Sanders said nothing -- says nothing -- about this damning legacy of his opponent. It's an extraordinary omission by someone presenting himself as an alternative to the failed elitist policies of the past.

The only Sanders reference to Honduras that I've been able to find is some justified criticism of the draconian treatment of Honduran refugees by the Obama-Clinton team. But he never tied this back to why there has been a flood of Hondurans fleeing their country -- most of them children, sent on a perilous journey by desperate parents hoping to save them from the hellish conditions wrought by the coup. Political repression and rampant gangsterism -- including the abandonment of broad swathes of society to the ravages of poverty and gangs -- have driven the nation to its knees. Last week's murder of indigenous activist Berta Cáceres is but the latest bitter fruit of the Obama-Clinton betrayal of democracy.

Mit Wut und Schmerz trauern wir um unsere Compañera Berta Cáceres, indigene, anti-kapitalistischen Umweltaktivistin und Feministin aus Honduras. Sie wurde in der Nacht vom 2. auf den 3. März, einen Tag vor ihrem 43. Geburtstag, in ihrem Haus ermordet.

American musicians who support boycotting Israel over the issue of Palestinian rights are terrified to speak out for fear their careers will be destroyed, according to Roger Waters.

The Pink Floyd star – a prominent supporter of the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel since its inception 10 years ago – said the experience of seeing himself constantly labelled a Nazi and anti-Semite had scared people into silence.

“The only response to BDS is that it is anti-Semitic,” Waters told The Independent, in his first major UK interview about his commitment to Israeli activism. “I know this because I have been accused of being a Nazi and an anti-Semite for the past 10 years.

“My industry has been particularly recalcitrant in even raising a voice [against Israel]. There’s me and Elvis Costello, Brian Eno, Manic Street Preachers, one or two others, but there’s nobody in the United States where I live. I’ve talked to a lot of them, and they are scared s***less.
