Too tired, poor, scared and hungry to venture outside, they struggle to survive from one day to the next amid the crippling siege as well as the ongoing Islamic State onslaught.

As many as 13,000 people were hanged in five years at a notorious Syrian government prison near Damascus, Amnesty International said on Tuesday, accusing the government of a "policy of extermination".

Titled H'uman Slaughterhouse: Mass Hangings and Extermination at Saydnaya Prison', Amnesty's damning report is based on interviews with 84 witnesses, including guards, detainees and judges.

"Saydnaya military prison is where the Syrian state quietly slaughters its own people. The victims are overwhelmingly ordinary civilians who are thought to oppose the government. Since 2011, thousands of people have been extrajudicially executed in mass hangings, carried out at night and in the utmost secrecy," read the report.

Israeli Deputy Minister Admits He Visited Syria

Deputy Minister Ayoub Kara, a member of the Likud faction, admitted on Saturday he visited in Syria since the beginning of the civil war there.

Kara, the deputy regional cooperation minister, was asked about his experience in Syria at a cultural event in Be'er Sheva. He said that the situation is "very hard, a very serious situation, you can't even imagine… It's a whole other world. When you crossover from Israel to Lebanon or Syria, you see the difference."

A draft Syrian constitution prepared by Russia suggests that the word “Arab” will be removed from the official name of the Syrian Arab Republic, currently ruled by a faction of the pan-Arab nationalist Baath Party.

Russia’s constitutional proposals were revealed during the Astana peace talks this week, according to Sputnik.

As far back as June 2016, the state-owned Russian news agency reported: "Russia suggested that Syria should change its official name from the Syrian Arab Republic to the Republic of Syria, in order to appeal to ethnic minorities such as Kurds and Turkmen."

“I oppose the regime, but I have to admit Assad managed the crisis well. At the moment, we have no alternative to him. If there were an election today, he would get more than 70% of the vote. Of course, my criticism of the regime hasn't changed. People put their criticisms on the back burner temporarily because they realized the country was about to disintegrate. It wasn’t the right time to settle scores with the regime. But when the war is finally finished, people will want drastic changes. The government is aware of this mood and is trying to change some things. Be assured, nothing will be the same as before," he said.

An academic who joined our discussion said, “Many heads will roll. [There is] no other way.”

The Russian-Syrian bombing campaign in eastern Aleppo, which has ended at least for the time being, has been described in press reports and op-eds as though it were unique in modern military history in its indiscriminateness. In an usual move for a senior US official, Secretary of State John Kerry called for an investigation of war crimes in Aleppo.
The discussion has been lacking in historical context, however. Certainly the civilian death toll from the bombing and shelling in Aleppo has been high, but many of the strikes may not be all that dissimilar from the major US bombing campaign in Iraq in 2003, nor as indiscriminate as Israel’s recent campaigns in densely populated cities.

The impression that the bombing in Aleppo was uniquely indiscriminate was a result of news reporting and commentary suggesting, by implication, that there are no real military targets in east Aleppo.

Adnan bribed his way out of Bashar al-Assad’s army when he was 19. Mid-level officers in Syria’s military do not make enough to turn down cash from teenage soldiers.

HIs entry to the army was as abrupt as his depature. In October 2013, Adnan was on his way to buy breakfast for his wife, Hala, a “very sweet” girl from his neighbourhood whom he had married 10 days earlier.

But soldiers grabbed him on his way to the bakery, bundled him into a bus and sent him to an army barracks.

He was given a gun, told how to shoot it, and was soon shipped out to fight alongside Assad's career soldiers.

“They put me on the front lines," he said. "They said if I didn’t fight, they would kill me.”

For eight weeks, Adnan said, he fought far from home and against enemies that were never identified. When asked whom he fought, Adnan simply replied: "We fought for the regime – that's it."

He survived two months of Assad’s war before identifying a mid-level officer known for accepting escape bribes.

Adnan's family sold their house, and his brother secretly transferred the money to a guard, who turned the other way when Adnan ran from camp.

He fled to Turkey, and then to Chios as one of 1,322 refugees who arrived during a single night in February.

Ehemalige IS-Kämpfer erzählen von den grauenhaften Taten, die täglich in dem als „Islamischer Staat“ ausgerufenen Gebiet in Syrien verbrochen werden. Menschen werden geradezu wahllos auf offner Straße erschossen, oder noch schlimmer: Es wird ihnen mit einem absichtlich stummen Messer die Kehle durchgeschnitten, um sie besonders leiden zu lassen und den Körper zu verstümmeln. Überall liegen Leichen mit abgetrennten Köpfen. Opfer von den fanatischen und alles andere als islamischen IS-Kämpfern. Doch nicht nur mit den „Ungläubigen“ wird grauenvoll umgegangen, auch ihre eigenen Kämpfer lassen die Kommandeure auf den Schlachtfeldern verbluten und verkümmern.

Die Erlebnisse, die die IS-Deserteure schildern, sind unvorstellbar. Wir hören von Folter, Vergewaltigung und Mord und fragen uns, wie ein Mensch freiwillig in diese Hölle gehen kann, um dem IS zu dienen? Und auch davon, was sie bewogen hat und warum sie wieder rauswollten, erzählen die reuigen Dschihadisten, welche von einem geheimen Netzwerks zur Ausschleusung aus dem Kampfgebiet geholt wurden.
