Basil al-Araj assassinated by Israeli occupation forces after PA imprisonment and months in hiding

In a pre-dawn raid attacking a home in el-Bireh, Basil al-Araj, 31, Palestinian youth activist and writer pursued by Israel for nearly a year, was assassinated by invading Israeli occupation forces this morning.

Al-Araj, from the village of Walaja near Bethlehem, fought back and resisted the invading forces for two hours before the attacking occupation soldiers broke into the home where he was staying and executed him at close range. They then seized his body and took it to an unknown location.

The attack on the home included rocket fire as well as al-Araj’s extrajudicial execution in a hail of bullets. Al-Araj’s family home in al-Walaja had been repeatedly raided by occupation forces for months.

Al-Araj, a writer and activist involved in a wide array of Palestinian grassroots struggles for liberation, was among the Palestinian youth dedicated to reviving the Palestinian national liberation movement. One of six Palestinian youth released from Palestinian Authority prisons after nearly six months of detention when they launched a hunger strike, Al-Araj and other youth had been seized in April in what was touted as a victory for security coordination between the PA and Israel. While they were imprisoned by the PA, they were subject to torture and ill-treatment by PA security forces.

A Palestinian woman sustained moderate burns on Sunday after she set fire to herself in front of a police station in the Iktaba neighborhood of Tulkarem in the northern West Bank.

Palestinian police spokesman Luay Irzeiqat said that the woman torched herself to protest a move by Tulkarem municipality to remove a vendor stand used by her husband.

Families of Palestinians killed in Gaza war protest at Palestine TV office

Dozens of family members of Palestinians killed during the 2014 Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip broke into the office of the state-run Palestine TV news network in Gaza City on Tuesday for second time in two weeks.

The relatives have been protesting since January against the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) failure to disburse allowances to “martyrs’ families.”

Fatah objects to Qatari accusations that PA 'impeding' Gaza electricity situation

The Palestinian Authority’s ruling Fatah party has reportedly rejected criticism made by a Qatari official last week, who said the PA was impeding efforts to resolve the besieged Gaza Strip’s ongoing electricity crisis.

Qatari special envoy to the Gaza Strip Muhammad al-Amadi’s interview with Hebrew-language news outlet Walla, which was also published in the English-language Times of Israel, was said to be the first time an official Qatari representative gave an interview to an Israeli news outlet.

In regards to the besieged Gaza Strip’s severe electricity crisis, al-Amadi told Walla that he believed Israel was “ready to help with the plan Qatar proposed, but the Palestinian Authority is impeding it."

He said Qatar has given several suggestions to solve the ongoing crisis, including the establishment of a new power line from Israel to fuel the besieged coastal enclave’s sole power plant.

The Palestinian Authority's (PA) Attorney General Ahmad Barak on Monday decided to ban the distribution of a novel by Palestinian novelist Abbad Yahya for containing "indecent and improper terminology."

The Office of the Attorney General confirmed that a decision was taken to collect all copies of the novel "Crime in Ramallah" by Abbad Yahya.

The novel, they said, includes indecent terminology and phrases which could "harm readers," especially children and minors.

Gaza court sentences Palestinian to 20 years in prison for 'unintentional murder'

A Palestinian in Gaza convicted of unintentional murder was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday in a court in Khan Yunis.

Prosecution head Iyad Mismah said in a statement that the charge was changed from premeditated murder to unintentional killing for the death of Khalid Nizar Hadayed.

Mismah added that the prosecution sought to provide evidence and prepare charges in order to “prevent murders and homicides, to achieve the law’s aims in preventing crimes, punish those responsible, and maintain security.”

Gaza court sentences 8 Fatah members to prison, including 3 for life, for spying

A Gaza military court sentenced eight Palestinians affiliated to the Fatah party -- three of whom to life in prison -- for allegedly gathering information about Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza for intelligence forces of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

The court, which only identified the defendants by their initials, said that the eight were convicted of “harming the Palestinian people’s interests” by coordinating to collect information about resistance factions in the besieged Gaza Strip, including on tunnels built by groups such as Hamas.

Relatives of Fatah supporters jailed by Hamas demonstrate in Gaza

Relatives of Fatah movement supporters jailed by the Hamas-led security services in the Gaza Strip demonstrated on Monday outside the building of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza City.

Demonstrators told Ma'an that they wanted Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Legislative Council to intervene and get their relatives released "immediately."

“Our children should be honored and dignified rather than being jailed,” they said.

Lebanon: Schools in Palestinian camp reopen after gun battles

Schools and social services have resumed in Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp, amid sporadic violence which has interrupted lessons and raised questions about local forces’ ability to keep the peace.

It is the first time in four months that shootings have prompted UNRWA, the UN agency that provides aid for Palestinian refugees, to halt operations at Ain al-Hilweh on the outskirts of the southern Lebanese city of Saida.

The community is already tense because of Lebanese army plans to build a wall round it on security grounds.

UNRWA: 'Don't forget over half a million Palestinians from Syria'

Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Pierre Krahenbuhl is set to attend an international conference in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday, where he will tell the attendees that “the world should not forget” some 560,000 Palestinian refugees living in Syria whose lives “have been impacted by the deepening conflict.”

According to statement from UNRWA, the conference has been called to launch the “Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP)” in response to the crisis in Syria, when Krahenbuhl will and explain to delegates that a staggering 430,000 Palestine refugees -- 95 per cent Palestinian refugees remaining in Syria -- are in need of emergency humanitarian assistance.

According to UNRWA, overall, 280,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria have been internally displaced, while around 43,000 have been trapped in hard-to-reach or besieged areas.

Additionally, the UN agency reported that there were more than 30,000 Palestinian refugees from Syria who have fled to Lebanon and nearly 17,000 who have fled to Jordan, “where they face a marginalized and precarious existence.”

Adel Meshoukhi was summoned by police and arrested, an interior ministry source said.

On Wednesday Meshoukhi published an online video about the ongoing shortages of electricity and employment in Gaza which included the line "Hamas enough".

It has been viewed more than 150,000 times.

Power shortages in the Palestinian enclave have occurred repeatedly in recent weeks, with homes in Gaza City typically getting around four hours a day instead of at least eight normally.

PA asks Attorney General to shut down 13 local radio, TV stations

Officials of the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) Ministry of Information sent an official request to the office of the attorney general on Monday asking to shut down 13 local radio and TV stations who are allegedly operating without a license.

The ministry's director general in the northern occupied West Bank, Majid Kittana, told Ma'an that the ministry asked the attorney general to shut down eight local radio stations and five TV stations. He highlighted that in general, 75 radio stations and 15 TV stations were currently operating across the West Bank.

Hope hard to come by in Lebanon camp

For young people in Ein al-Hilweh, Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp, there are few glimmers of hope for a better life.

Like many of his peers in the impoverished community – not far from the coastal city of Sidon in the south – Khaled, 17, dropped out of school years ago. But unlike many of his peers, he hasn’t taken up arms in exchange for a monthly stipend from one of the camp’s many political factions, saying he would “rather play video games and spend time with friends.”

Instead, he takes electrical engineering classes sponsored by international organizations as a means of escaping the danger in Ein al-Hilweh’s narrow streets.

Syria refugees test Palestinian solidarity in Lebanon

When Palestinian Fuad Abu Khaled fled Syria's war in 2013, he sought refuge among his own, looking for solidarity among Palestinian refugees based in Lebanon's Shatila camp.

But instead he found a community already struggling to get by and sometimes resentful of new arrivals who are testing the limited resources of the UN agency dedicated to helping Palestinian refugees.

'Afro-Palestinians' forge a unique identity in Israel

In the shadow of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem's Old City lies the "African Quarter" — home to a little-known community of nearly 50 Arab families of African descent.

Descended from Muslim pilgrims from a variety of African countries, they now consider themselves proud Palestinians, despite widespread poverty and occasional discrimination from both Palestinians and Israelis. Several have even participated in violent attacks against Israel.

"We regard ourselves to be Afro-Palestinian," said community leader Ali Jiddah.

Jiddah, a former member of the radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, spent 17 years in Israeli prison for taking part in a 1968 bombing that wounded nine Israelis before he was freed in a prisoner swap. Jiddah, who long ago renounced violence, is now a well-known tour guide in the Old City, offering what he calls an "alternative" perspective on the conflict with Israel.

Palestinian with Israeli citizenship shot dead in Galilee-area town

A Palestinian with Israeli citizenship was shot dead in the town of Kafr Kanna in northern Israel on Saturday.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri identified the slain Palestinian as 48-year-old Anan Hakroush, adding in her statement that Hakroush was shot while in a private vehicle near the Mercantile Bank in the Galilee.

According to al-Samri, he was found with several gunshot injuries in his vehicle and was evacuated to a hospital near Tiberias, where he was later pronounced dead.

Local sources in Kafr Kanna told Ma’an that the victim’s uncle Jamal Hakroush is a high-ranking official in the Israeli police, in charge of improving police services in Palestinian neighborhoods in Israel.

Palestinian-majority neighborhoods in Israel have seen an increase in gun violence in recent years, while members of the Arab Joint List of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, have called on authorities to crack down on illegal weapons in Israel’s Palestinian communities, where there is a disproportionate lack of policing compared to Jewish-majority neighborhoods.

Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Maliki denied on Monday claims that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had ever asked him or other Palestinian Authority (PA) officials to go after diaspora Palestinians who criticized Abbas on social media.

In an interview with Ma’an on Monday, al-Maliki said that he was "surprised with the false accusations which pass from mouth to mouth."

Khan Eshieh camp under renewed attack

Russian and Syrian government air strikes hit the Palestinian refugee camp west of Damascus in the pre-dawn hours, killing a baby, while shelling throughout the day killed another two.

“Since the end of last month, shelling on the camp has intensified,” said Emad al-Muslimani, a media activist inside the camp. “Barrel bombs, cluster munitions, bunker-buster missiles, you name it. It is like the camp is being used as a testing ground for weapons.”

Palestinians in Syria's Khan al-Shih refugee camp demand end to bombardment

Residents of the Palestinian refugee camp of Khan al-Shih in war-torn Syria southwest of Damascus held a protest Tuesday condemning the bombardment of the camp and threats of heavier siege conditions.

A statement released on Facebook during the protest listed several demands from residents of the camp, including the end of all bombardments, securing safe passage for residents, providing bread for residents, reinstating UNRWA-run and social services for the besieged camp, while giving medicine to children, women, and the elderly in the camp, and resuming the provision of services from all foundations and institutions.

Conflicting reports over deadly shooting by Palestinian police in Nablus

Conflicting reports have emerged over clashes that broke out early Wednesday morning in Nablus City that left one alleged Palestinian gunman shot dead and three others injured by Palestinian security forces.

Palestinian security forces arrested a Palestinian military liaison officer from his home in Jenin on Saturday, a day after he shared a post on his Facebook criticizing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' participation in the funeral of former Israeli president Shimon Peres.

A member of Osama Abu Arab’s family told Ma’an via telephone that large numbers of Palestinian security officers surrounded Abu Asab’s home Saturday morning and took him into custody.

The source highlighted that hours before Abu Arab was arrested, he was notified that he was suspended from his work as a major in the Palestinian Authority military liaison office.The military liaison is a unit with the Palestinian security forces responsible for coordinating security with Israel.

The caller also said that the family believed Abu Arab was suspended from his work and arrested as a result of a post he published on his Facebook page asking Abbas to reconsider his decision to attend Peres’ funeral.

Ayelet Shaked, Israel’s justice minister, faced protests as she spoke to law students and professors at Columbia University’s law school on 19 September.

In a secret audio recording taken during the closed event, Shaked can be heard seeking to revive a discredited idea long championed by Shimon Peres, the leading Israeli politician who died this week.

The idea is that a deal could be struck with Jordan to push Palestinians under its jurisdiction as Israel maintains effective control over the occupied West Bank.

As preparations were being made in Washington for the Gulf War, a group of Palestinian intellectuals gathered in a Manhattan apartment to discuss how the Palestine Liberation Organization should respond to Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Raji Sourani, director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, was among those in attendance. He has confirmed to us that – after much debate – the conclusion was clear: occupation is occupation, no matter who was responsible and even if the impending American war was equally illegitimate.

The group then dispatched Edward Said, a member of the Palestinian National Council, to Tunis.

Said was asked to try to convince Yasser Arafat, the PLO leader, that he should condemn the Iraqi invasion. Arafat ignored Said – and many others – and backed Saddam.

It was a moral and political miscalculation which led to approximately 400,000 Palestinians being expelled or fleeing from Kuwait after Iraqi forces were dislodged in 1991.

The consequences of that decision to defy international law created a heavy burden for the affected families.
