Military Police Massacre Student Protesters in Honduras: A Human Rights Observer Speaks

Four young students have been assassinated and another two have been shot in an education crisis that has led a country of students into the streets. On Monday, March 16, 2015 in the capital Tegucigalpa, in San Pedro Sula, and Intibuca, students demanded that the Ministry of Education, Marlon Escoto retract his directive to extend class times to 7 pm. In a country with the highest homicide rate in the hemisphere, students cite the danger of returning home after dark.

Honduran Public High School and University Students in Resistance,

On behalf of over 30 organizations from the United States and Canada, the Honduras Solidarity Network (HSN) extends its deepest condolences to the family members, peers, and friends of the four students – Soad Nicole Ham Bustillo, Darwin Josué Martínez, Elvin Antonio López, and Diana Yareli Montoya – who were murdered on March 24 and 25, 2015 in Tegucigalpa.

We condemn the death squad-style killings of these four high school students, who had been involved in student protests in the days leading up to their murder. We are also outraged at the repression and terror campaign that the student and social movements face in the country as they organize street protests across the country to oppose neoliberal reforms to public education. These reforms – including closing teaching and technical schools, extending class times, and eliminating night classes, amongst others – are being implemented by the Honduran government with direct financing and support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United States government’s Agency for International Development (USAID).

Update on Honduran Student Massacre

An education crisis in Honduras has left some students assassinated and others seriously injured after they demanded education reforms. In protests against the current education system and against the Ministry of Education students were violently repressed by military police who used tear gas and live bullets against the children. Most were of high school age, but some were in middle school and others were university students.

The youngest killed was 13 year old Soad Nicole Ham Bustillo (pictured below) whose body was discovered the day after a major protest in the capital Tegucigalpa.

Höchste Mordrate weltweit

Auch im sechsten Jahr nach dem Putsch von 2009 hat sich die Menschenrechtslage nicht verbessert

„Ein absolut katastrophales Jahr für Millionen von Menschen“, so fasste die Generalsekretärin der deutschen Sektion von Amnesty International, Selmin Caliskan, die internationale Situation der Menschenrechte im Jahr 2014 zusammen. Besonders katastrophal ist sie in Honduras, das erneut das Land mit der weltweit höchsten Mordrate ist. Lokale Menschenrechtsorganisationen berichten außerdem von einer neuen Welle der Gewalt, seitdem Präsident Juan Orlando Hernández im Januar seine erste Abstimmungsniederlage im Parlament hinnehmen musste.

Palmöl, Bergbau und Wasserkraftwerke

Die extraktivistischen Industrien sind in Honduras auf dem Vormarsch

Die Vergabe hunderter Bergbaukonzessionen, die stetige Ausweitung von Palmöl-Monokulturen und mehrere geplante Wasserkraftwerke sorgen in Honduras für immer neue Konflikte zwischen den Interessen der extraktivistischen Industrien und den Rechten der indigenen und bäuerlichen Bevölkerung auf Nutzung ihres Landes und der natürlichen Ressourcen. Wo sich Widerstand gegen die Projekte bildet, werden Militär und Polizei eingesetzt. Im März 2015 reiste eine Delegation der honduranischen Zivilgesellschaft durch Europa, um vor der wiederkehrenden Überprüfung der Menschenrechtslage durch das Hochkommisariat für Menschenrechte der UN in Genf ihre Berichte vorzustellen (siehe LN 489). Die LN sprachen mit den Delegationsmitgliedern Martha Arnold und Juan Mejía über die Allianz zwischen extraktivistischen Industrien und staatlichen Instanzen.
