Russia and Turkey are extending gestures to one another in hopes of strengthening ties, but there are many factors at play: their opposing goals in the Syrian war, Black Sea politics and — not a small sticking point — Russia is still waiting for an apology and restitution for Turkey's downing of its jet last year.

Turkey huffs and puffs at genocide vote, but it's business as usual with Germany

......Sanberk’s words put the basic problem Turkey has with regard to Germany after the adoption of the Armenian genocide resolution into perspective. The bottom line is that Ankara will huff and puff, but it will be business as usual in the end.

In early April, as renewed fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region made headlines in Turkey, there was little talk of the crucial role of Israeli weapons in the clashes. Only the daily Hurriyet reported on Azerbaijan's use of the Israeli Harop armed drone, which generated Armenian protests.

The Turkish government is planning to lift the parliamentary immunity of members of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP). The US says it has no position on this.

The Turkish parliamentary committee on Tuesday approved the lifting of the immunity which would most likely lead to the prosecution of HDP-members and them ending up in jail, ending the Kurdish presence in the parliament.

New PostErstellt: 29.04.16, 22:28  Betreff: Republikaner kritisieren Unterstützung der syrischen Kurden  drucken  weiterempfehlen

New PostErstellt: 02.04.16, 12:12  Betreff: Chaotic scenes in US capital as Erdogan defends Kurdish crackdown  drucken  weiterempfehlen

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faced noisy protests on Thursday as he confronted critics in Washington, defending his media crackdown and accusing the West of turning a blind eye to Kurdish violence.

The White House said that US President Barack Obama had met Erdogan on the sidelines of a nuclear security summit in the US capital, but the absence of a formal presidential meeting between the pair appeared to highlight the simmering diplomatic tensions between the NATO allies with sharply differing views over the war in Syria.

Amid President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent West African tour, from Feb. 28 to March 4 and including visits to Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Guinea, news reports surfaced of Turkey establishing a military presence on the strategic Horn of Africa, in Somalia. This development will make Turkey the fifth foreign country to have a military presence in Africa, joining Britain, France, Japan and the United States.

The Pentagon approved a deal Tuesday to sell nearly $700 million worth of smart bombs to Turkey through its Foreign Military Sales scheme. The sale comes at a pivotal time for Ankara’s military, which continues to be heavily involved in attacking the military arm of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq.

“The deal came timely, as we are deeply engaged in asymmetrical warfare and need smart bombs,” a Turkish military official told Defense News.

New PostErstellt: 24.01.16, 11:48  Betreff: PKK and IS 'pose existential threats' to Turkey: Biden  drucken  weiterempfehlen

Joe Biden, the US Vice President, said on Saturday that Washington recognised the "existential threat" to Turkey posed by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and compared it to the Islamic State (IS) group in comments supportive of Turkey's recent crackdown on suspected Kurdish militants and their supporters.

Speaking alongside Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish prime minister, at a press conference in Istanbul, Biden said that the PKK, which has waged a decades-long separatist struggle mostly in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeast, was a "a terror group plain and simple".

IS was "not the only existential threat to the people of Turkey, the PKK is equally a threat and we are aware of that," Biden told reporters.

"We do agree with you that in terms of their actions Daesh [IS], PKK and al-Nusra [al-Qaeda's Syria affiliate] ... are simply terrorist groups," said Biden.

Turkey’s difficulties with Syrian Kurds complicate strategy against Islamic State

Turkey and the United States continued Saturday to disagree about the status of Kurdish forces who have become a key part of the U.S. strategy to defeat the Islamic State in Syria.

In statements after a two-hour meeting here, Vice President Biden and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu praised the sometimes rocky U.S.-Turkish alliance. Calling Turkey a “strategic partner,” Biden said the relationship is “enduring, it’s rooted in history, it’s in the hearts of our people.”

But in the stew of overlapping conflicts, regional rivalries and competing interests in the civil war in Syria, and the expansion of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, U.S.-Turkey ties have often been strained. Biden’s visit here was intended to shore them up, officials traveling with him said, and to add some high-level impetus to resolving a range of issues.

New PostErstellt: 27.11.15, 16:06  Betreff: Turkey charges journalists with spying over Syria weapons story  drucken  weiterempfehlen

A court in Istanbul charged two journalists from the Cumhuriyet newspaper with spying after the paper had alleged that Turkey's intelligence agency had sent arms to rebels in Syria, Turkish media reported.

Editor-in-chief Can Dundar and Erdem Gul, the paper's Ankara bureau chief, have been indicted of spying and "divulging state secrets", the reports said. Both men were placed in pre-trial detention.

According to Cumhuriyet, Turkish security forces in January 2014 intercepted a convoy of trucks near the Syrian border. The newspaper published a video showing what boxes containing what the newspaper described as weapons and ammunition being sent to rebels fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

It linked the seized trucks to the Turkish National Intelligence Organisation (MIT).

The revelations, published in May, caused a political storm in Turkey ahead of the June elections, with an enraged President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowing Dundar would pay a "heavy price".

Meet The Man Who Funds ISIS: Bilal Erdogan, The Son Of Turkey's President

....Necmettin Bilal Erdogan, commonly known as Bilal Erdogan (born 23 April 1980) is the third child of Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, the current President of Turkey.

After graduating from Kartal Imam Hatip High School in 1999, Bilal Erdogan moved to the US for undergraduate education. He also earned a Masters Degree in John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2004. After graduation, he served in the World Bank as intern for a while. He returned Turkey in 2006 and started to his business life. Bilal Erdogan is one of the three equal shareholders of "BMZ Group Denizcilik ", a marine transportation corporation.

Here is a recent picture of Bilal, shown in a photo from a Turkish 2014 article, which "asked why his ships are now in Syria":

In the next few days, we will present a full breakdown of Bilal's various business ventures, starting with his BMZ Group which is the name implicated most often in the smuggling of illegal Iraqi and Islamic State through to the western supply chain, but for now here is a brief, if very disturbing snapshot, of both father and son Erdogan by F. William Engdahl, one which should make everyone ask whether the son of Turkey's president (and thus, the father) is the silent mastermind who has been responsible for converting millions of barrels of Syrian Oil into hundreds of millions of dollars of Islamic State revenue.

Syria: The Turkish Russian Apology Contest

Erdogan did not take the exit ramp Putin offered. So who will win this contest?

U.S. Air Force General (ret) Charles J. Dunlap assesses that Russia wins the legal case. The Turkish shoot down of the Russian bomber was plainly illegal under international law as there was no threat to Turkey from the Russian plane. Even Turkey itself does not allege that the Russian bomber intended to attack that country. There was no self-defense situation that would allow such behavior.
