Workers at one of Saudi Arabia’s largest employers set fire to buses on Saturday amid protests at being laid off and told to leave the kingdom without being paid for several months work.

Footage uploaded to YouTube showed employees of the Binladin Group protesting outside the construction company’s offices in Mecca province, and setting fire to several buses.

One killed as Turkish police lock down Istanbul ahead of May Day marches

A man was reportedly killed by water cannon fire in Istanbul Sunday as police locked down areas of the city in anticipation of May Day marches celebrating International Workers Day.

According to the Dogan News Agency, 57-year-old Nail Mavus was fired on by a water cannon security vehicle while crossing the street in the Tarlabasi area of Beyoglu, near Taksim Square.

He was taken to a hospital in Istanbul’s Sisli district, where he succumbed to his wounds. It is not known whether he had been intending to participate in the marches or why he was fired upon.

There were also reports of tear gas being used on protesters attempting to reach Taksim Square.

New PostErstellt: 02.05.16, 21:41  Betreff: 12,000 Saudi citizens fired by struggling Binladin Group  drucken  weiterempfehlen

More than two-thirds of Saudi citizens working for one of the kingdom’s largest employers have been sacked, amid an ongoing economic crisis sparked by low oil prices.

Saudi daily Al Watan reported on Monday that 12,000 of 17,000 Saudi employees had been fired at the Binladin Group construction firm.

The Saudis had been employed as engineers, administrators and inspectors, according to Watan.

The newspaper cited an unnamed company official who said that in addition to the Saudi sackings, 77,000 out of 200,000 foreign workers had been fired and given permanent exit visas to leave the kingdom.

Staff at a prestigious private hospital in Saudi Arabia entered the fourth day of an open-ended strike on Wednesday in protest over wages not being paid for almost four months.

Two doctors, one American and the other British, and two nurses, one Saudi and the other Jordanian, told MEE more than 1,200 staff at Saad Specialist Hospital in the eastern city of Khobar have not been paid since May.

Despite trade union activity being strictly banned in Saudi Arabia the staff have organised an ongoing strike that began on Sunday which they said would only end once all workers were paid what they were owed.

Stranded workers in Saudi Arabia plead for help as economy falters

Workers at a construction company in Saudi Arabia have issued an urgent plea for help, saying they are trapped and facing starvation because their employer is refusing to pay salaries or grant them permission to leave the country.

Foreign staff at building firm United Seemac told MEE the company's 500-plus employees have not been paid in months and that both the Saudi government and their embassies have done little to solve their increasingly desperate crisis.

Scores of foreign staff at Saudi Arabian company the Saad Group blocked a road in the Eastern Province on Tuesday as part of a protest over not being paid in more than seven months.

Footage sent to MEE showed a large group of mainly Indian and Pakistani workers stopping traffic on the road that links the town of al-Hasa to the Eastern Province’s capital Dammam.

New PostErstellt: 04.01.17, 13:40  Betreff: Saudi Arabia jails and flogs workers for unpaid wage protests  drucken  weiterempfehlen

Dozens of foreign workers have been sentenced to flogging and jail for unrest during protests over unpaid wages by Saudi Binladin Group several months ago, reports said on Tuesday.

Al-Watan newspaper and Arab News did not give the nationalities of the 49 workers, and foreign embassy staff in the kingdom contacted by AFP could not immediately provide details.

Al-Watan, which has followed the Binladin case since early last year, said an unidentified number were sentenced to four months' jail and 300 lashes for destroying public property and inciting unrest.

Others were jailed for 45 days by a court in Mecca.

New PostErstellt: 06.03.17, 22:51  Betreff: Saudi Arabia Uncovered ; Documentary Exposes the Horror of Life in Saudi Arabia  drucken  weiterempfehlen

The documentary is based on six months of undercover filming and its footage of beatings and beheadings is disturbing enough. But it also exposes the extremes of wealth and poverty in this oil-rich country.

Furthermore, it tells the story of the men and women who dare to speak out against the Saudi dictatorship, and reveals the terrible price they have to pay for their courage.

The film, to be shown tomorrow night, is a shared production by ITV and the Public Broadcasting Service in the U.S.

Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest exporter of crude oil – but the kingdom is overly dependent on black gold.

Now it wants to rapidly reform and diversify its economy under the Vision 2030 plan, the country’s biggest and most radical economic change in decades.

The strategy was launched in April 2016 by Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, deputy crown prince and the most powerful man in the kingdom.
