Lord Charlie's Recommendation!
'Song For a Raggy Boy'....This films been in the Robomule Library for a few weeks now and if you haven't chosen to download it, I urge you to have a go. If you liked 'Dead Poets Society' this is very much along the same lines. But for me, better. Instead of it being well-off private school kids, it's all about down and out Irish boys that have been put under lock and key in a reform centre and forgotten about. Even the guy who is 'supposed' to be looking after them describes them as 'animals'. But then comes along the inspirational teacher who takes on the barbaric monks that run the institution. He educates the boys in reading and writing (as most can't even read). When you watch the film you really see the good side in these kids. I warn you now it's very hard to watch at times when they are brutally beaten, graphically depicted with no shortage of blood, as well being abused. But this is why you can be so taken with the movie as you feel for them. The ending is equally tragic as triumphant. No more to be said, you need to get downloadin!

ROBOMULE LINK LIBRARY
THREE NEW FILMS IN THE LIBRARY THIS WEEK
No topic this week - just three good films added. 'La Gloire de Mon Pere' is a light addition to the library about a couple of boys having fun in provence. 'Pixote' however is anything but light dealing with heavy issues in the lives of Brazilian street kids. All the actors are actual street kids and do a marvellous job - have a watch. Last is 'Machuca' - a Chilean film. Thought I'd already put it in the library - must have deleted it by accident. All films are complete - checked.

La Gloire de Mon Pere

"The beauty of this film is enough in itself to make it all worth while," a movie-viewing companion of mine said the last time I watched My Father's Glory. And, yes, she is certainly right; so seldom is a lush, scenic cinematography so wonderfully combined with a sentimentally poetic yet honest outlook on life. Based on the writings of Marcel Pagnol, we here learn of this renowned French author and director's childhood. The film opens with his birth, then focuses for approximately a half an hour on him as a tyke (Benoit Martin) of about four through six years of age. There is then a jump forward which places Marcel (Julian Ciamaca) at roughly eleven years old. Here, a "plot" begins to form, our young hero taking a trip into the Provence countryside with his family. Outside of having a number of adventures with his little brother (Victorien Delamare) and a local boy (Joris Molinus), Marcel begins to learn that his intelligent, educated father is not as omnipotent as he once thought, especially when it comes to a hunting match between the man and his brother in-law, the former much less skilled in practical things than the latter. Will Marcel lose all respect for his dad, become disillusioned with him, or is he to gain a new understanding, appreciation for his father?

Pixote - a lei de mas fraco

Meet Pixote (pronounced "Pea-shot"), a baby-faced boy of about ten who has had a run-in with the law, which is an easy thing to do if you are a runaway kid struggling to survive in Brazil. While spending some time in reform school, our young hero makes a few older friends who teach him the ropes. Out on the streets, Pixote and his pals quickly enter the criminal underworld, make their living by snatching purses, selling narcotics, pimping whores. Are they clever enough to stay alive in the often brutal environment? Fernando Ramos Da Silva who stars as Pixote, was a non-professional actor from a poor Brazilian family. He here gave such an incredible performance the boy quickly found himself a celebrity, but illiterate, he could not read well enough to memorize scripts, failed to make it as an actor. So, Fernando got involved in crime, was killed at the age of nineteen by a group of police; his death remains somewhat of a mystery even until today and is the subject of the 1996 film Who Killed Pixote?. Pixote was directed by Hector Babenco and is based on Jose Louzeiro's book A Infancia dos Mortos. Winner of many awards, this is an undisputed masterpiece. Highly recommended!

Machuca

Andr?s Wood?s film examines the events leading up to the September 1973 military coup in Chile through the eyes of a soft, sensitive 11-year-old boy named Gonzalo, who comes from a rich, unhappy Santiago family and attends an exclusive private school. There, he meets Pedro Machuca, one of a number of poor boys granted scholarsips by the headmaster, a priest flush with the egalitarian spirit of the times. The friendship of the two boys ? whose frequent companion is Silvana, a spritied girl from the shantytown where Pedro lives ? develops as the country slides into political turmoil. Mr. Wood, who based "Machuca" on events from his own childhood, hews closely to Gonzalo?s point of view, and in spite of a few schematic, overdone scenes, the movie is subtle, quiet and forceful.

Abandoned - Tales from the Orphanage

Nine-year-old Aron finds himself abandoned at a bleak orphanage by his recently divorced and despondent father. The ultra-strict nature of the institution comes as a complete shock to the boy, and he must frequently endure beatings both from the staff and the other boys. He finds solace in a special relationship with his young classmate Attila. And that sexual awakening gives him the courage to lead his peers in revolt.

Les Diables

This French drama follows two orphans - Joseph (Vincent Rottiers) and the possibly autistic Chloe (Adele Haenel) - as they set out to find the parents who abandoned them in the streets years earlier. Joseph and Chloe, who does not speak, have been on their own for years, shuffling between foster homes and institutions... usually running away and being brought back over and over again. It's not really clear what's wrong with Chloe, but she's soothed by savant-like mosiacs she creates with pieces of broken glass. As the pair carry on with their journey towards a dreamed-up home they imagine to be their own, they commit crimes, flee bullies, escape an orphanage and slowly begin to discover the truth about themselves and growing up.

Tom et Lola

Their immune systems tragically damaged, Tom and Lola are a pair of beautiful children isolated since birth in hermetically sealed plastic bubbles. But isolated bubbles and distant hospital technicians cannot inhibit the beguiling spirit and supernatural bond between Tom and Lola , the indomitable protagonists of Bertrand Arthuy's enchanting French fantasy. Objects of endless medical probes, Tom and Lola watch TV and dream of a distant world - of ice and snow, penguins and whales, dogsled rides across the mountainous tundra. Their valiant efforts to breach their suffocating isolation - a hilarious, often touching quest to reach Alaska - form the heart and soul of this magical film. Time and again, Tom and Lola outsmart their keepers, escaping to explore a world where wonder and surprises exist around every corner. Miniature fugitives, they elude their captors in a race against time. Superbly mounted, touchingly scored and brilliantly observed, Tom and Lola is a visual treat for anyone who has ever appreciated - or forgotten - the charm and innocence of youth.

The Boys of St Vincent

At a Catholic orphanage for boys, anywhere from ten to sixteen years of age, there is a hideous secret. On the outside, all might look well, but once the lights go out, the children fall victim to the physical and sexual abuse of disturbed caretakers. Originally shown in two parts for Canadian television, the first half focuses on the actual incidents, primarily follows ten year old Kevin (Johnny Morina) as he attempts to escape the sadistic passion the head priest holds for him. Part Two jumps forward fifteen years, has the now grown boys of St. Vincent confronting their attackers via the legal system. Can they cut through all the political hogwash that kept them silenced as children and find justice? Often said to be based on a true story, but more correctly defined as "a fictionalization loosely inspired by a number of separate incidents." Directed by John N. Smith; a highly praised film by many.

The Rascals - 'Les Turlupins'

During 1942 in Nazi-occupied France, the boys, anywhere from eight to sixteen years of age, at a boarding school located in the rural countryside aren't overly worried about the war, continue life as they normally would: cheat on tests, wonder about and involve themselves with girls, pull pranks, etcetera. The film's major focus is on Bernard (Bernard Brieux), fourteen or so, and his passion for a more experienced girl (Pascale Rocard). A generally well-liked film with a pleasant mix of drama and comedy.

Du Poil Sous Les Roses

Said to be the French American Pie, which means whereas the subject matter of adolescent sexuality is concerned expect a lot more reality rather than stupidity. Primarily focusing on a boy (Alexis Roucout) and girl (Julie Durand) of about sixteen years, this film follows this twosome as their curiosity and insecurities about sexuality are explored and while they slowly come together to become a couple. Recommended!

Leolo

Leo (Maxime Collin), on the verge of puberty, fantasizes and writes poetic descriptions of his beyond-bizarre family to cope with life in the Montreal slums. Dad is a fat slob obsessed with bowel movements; two sisters are residing in a mental institution; big bro is a muscle-head coward; gramps is a grouch hot for the teen next door; mom's special role has her becoming impregnated by a sperm covered tomato that Leo believes his true father "fertilized." Your typical family this hopefully is not, but an unusual film it certainly is. Nicely done, at least in a good number of individuals' opinions. If you enjoy peculiar dark comedies, check it out; if not, you might wish to stick with something a little more plot oriented. Loosely based on writer/director Jean-Claude Lauzon's own childhood. A great soundtrack is included.

Malena

There are few things that concern a twelve year old boy more than the frenetic goings-on in his trousers, and the predicament of Renato Amoroso (Giuseppe Sulfaro), the hero of Giuseppe Tornatore?s new film is no exception. Unfortunately for Renato, the onset of puberty coincides with discovering his town?s most beautiful woman, Malena, (Monica Bellucci) an untouchable goddess who sends Renato?s hormones into overdrive. The first half of this movie may be little more than a paean to the erotic desires of a young Catholic boy as Renato follows Malena everywhere she goes with carnal sin on his mind, but by the end the director has crafted a moving account of hypocrisy and guilt in a Sicilian town during the Second World War. Malena steps back to the world Tornatore portrayed in Cinema Paradiso and indicates that he is back to top form after the folly of The Legend of 1900.

War of the Buttons

Rival groups of boys from two neighboring Irish villages engage in a running battle in this remake of the 1962 French movie of the same name, based on a novel by Louis Pergaud. The boys from Ballydowse, who dress as they please, exchange insults with boys from nearby Carricksdowse -- who wear school uniforms. One day, the Bally gang cuts the buttons off the clothes of a bully in the Carricks gang. The Carricks retaliate by swiping the buttons from the clothes of the leader of the Bally boys, Fergus (Gregg Fitzgerald). The Ballys deface the Carricksdowse church, though both groups are Catholics. They rout the Carricks by charging at them naked. Marie (Eveanna Ryan), who heads the Ballys' girls auxiliary, tries to calm down the boys by raining new buttons on them to replace those lost in warfare. When Fergus' abusive stepfather (Jim Bartley) finds out about the war, he beats Fergus and sends him away. Fergus goes to the cliffs along the valley between the two villages, chased by the Carricks' leader, Geronimo (John Coffey). Geronimo, who has come to help, slips, and Fergus rescues him from a fall. In the end, Fergus, riding a horse, leads his troops, dressed in motley medieval suits, into a final battle.

Pelle der Eroberer

"If you want to conquer, what about the whole world?", says leave Karlson to Pelle, his 9-year-old son, when they went on the search for a new life. But times are hard and reality leads them into a slave life on a Danish property yard. Pelle?s life is however not only dark and sad. In his limited world he experiences small miracles and great adventures.

Song for a Raggy Boy

A teacher takes on the corrupt leadership of an Irish reform school in this drama based on a true story. William Franklin (Aidan Quinn) is a teacher who was born in Ireland and moved to the United States only to repatriate in 1939 after his leftist political views cause him to lose his job. Franklin becomes the first non-cleric instructor at St. Jude's, a school for wayward boys run by Brother John Iain Glen, who is a firm believer in strong discipline. But Franklin comes to believe the students are being treated with excessive force, with many of the children severely punished for trivial violations of the rules, and some treated as delinquents for the crime of not having parents. As Franklin campaigns for more humane treatment of his charges, he makes a powerful enemy in Brother John, who responds to Franklin's reform efforts with greater vehemence against the students, in particular Mercier (John Travers), an inquisitive child who has become a favorite of Franklin.

Blauvogel

George, the ten year old son of English settlers in midwestern America apparently about the time of the French and Indian Wars, is kidnapped by a native tribe and taken to their village. At first, you don't know what their intentions are toward the boy who is played by Robin Jaeger. When he is stripped, painted black and held under water, you think it may be some kind of ritual murder. However, it's only part of his initiation into the tribe. Renamed "Blauvogel" (Blue Hawk), he spends the next several years being raised by the Indians, who prove to be kind and probably more virtuous than the Europeans from which he came. Eventually, he is returned to his English family, but finds the readjustment difficult, particularly as they do not have the same respect for nature as the American natives.

For a Lost Soldier

The explosive subject of man-boy love is delicately handled in this touchingly romantic drama of a boy's coming-of-age during WWII. Joroen, a handsome rosey-cheeked boy of 13 is sent to the countryside to stay with a farming family in order to avoid the horrors of war. It is there that his adolescent sexual urges for boys begin to take hold. Initially interested in boys his own age, especially his girl-crazy best friend, the boy eventually finds his true love with Walt, a Canadian soldier stationed in the area as part of the Liberation forces. It is love-at-first-sight for the two who, undeterred by their language barrier, develop a friendship that begins first as buddies and develops later into a full-blown love affair. Their one lovemaking scene in which Walt calls Jeroen 'his little prince' is achingly romantic and sexually intense. And while the film isn't sexually graphic, it may shock with it's cavalier attitude towards their tender love. What is truly remarkable is that their is no negative after-effect of this affair on the boy. A truly rare and extraordinary film. (Dutch with English subititles)

The Genesis Children

The plot concerns eight American lads (ages about ten to sixteen) living in Rome, who are lured to a small Italian coastal town by a newspaper ad calling for boys `to act in a play.' Along the way, they encounter a man (played by Vincent Child) who appears to them in various guises: a priest; a teacher; a policeman; a politician. Directed by him to a secluded beach and finding themselves alone, they hang out for several days, swimming and sunbathing au natural. Indeed, this may be the ultimate skinnydipping movie. While there, they have some adventures. They explore a cave. They raise and repair a sunken rowboat, only to have it sink again. They attempt to steal food from a local farmer. They drive an abandoned van and end up wrecking it. Much of Genesis Children is Tom Sawyerish, but ends more like a milder `Lord of the Flies.'

Love Strange Love

A sensual and erotic tale of love unfolds amidst a steamy Brazilian landscape in a tale of a young boy's discovery of sexual pleasure. An innocent young boy is vengefully returned to his mother by a financially, bitter grandmother. Anna decides to have her son, Hugo, live with her in a luxurious brothel. He is at first intimidated, but the beautiful enticing girls of the house find his naivete enchanting, and slowly they help him adjust to this strange atmosphere. Hugo watches with curiosity all that goes on around him, until his increasingly erotic fantasies drive hime to exploration....to share his love with the person who is closest to him.

Acla's Descent into Floristella

The film is set in the 30s Sicily and tells the story of an 11-year-old boy, Acla, who is sold to a digger, Caramazza, at the Floristella sulphur mine. For five years, from Monday to Saturday, the boy becomes the property of Caramazza and spends the whole week living down the mine, like all the other miners. He only goes home on Saturday and Sunday. Acla experiences the hellish world of the sulphur mines, the stifling, choking galleries, the relationships that everybody indulges in by tacit agreement. Acla decides to escape...

Baikal Films - Gym Boys
