Will Yemen kick-off the 'War of the two Blocs?'
No, it isn’t a battle between Shia and Sunni, Iranian and Arab or the much-ballyhooed Iran-Saudi stand-off. Yes, these narratives have played a part in defining ‘sides,’ but often only in the most simplistic fashion, to rally constituencies behind a policy objective. And they do often reflect some truth.
But the ‘sides’ demarcated for our consumption do not explain, for instance, why Oman or Algeria refuse to participate, why Turkey is where it is, why Russia, China and the BRICS are participants, why the US is so conflicted in its direction – and why, in a number of regional conflicts, Sunni, Shia, Islamist, secularist, liberal, conservative, Christian, Muslim, Arab and Iranian sometimes find themselves on the same side.

Operation Decisive Storm and the Expanding Counter-Revolution
.............For those with longer historical memories, this military campaign suggests a previous proxy war between Gamal Abdel Nasser’s Egypt and Saudi Arabia, when both countries intervened in the Yemeni civil war (1962-1967) to support the Yemeni republicans, on the one hand, and the Yemeni monarchy, on the other. In that conflict, the Saudis backed the deposed Zaydi imam while Egyptian troops fought on the side of the “free officers.” Although the republican officers prevailed, Egypt suffered a kind of defeat, and Saudi Arabia ultimately extended its hegemony over what was then North Yemen.
A closer historical analogy might be the Iranian, Jordanian and British intervention in Oman against the rebellion of the Marxist Popular Front for the Liberation of Oman (PFLO) in the 1960s and 1970s. In that case an alliance of conservative monarchies joined forces to support the Omani sultanate against popular forces that had threatened to spread into the greater Persian Gulf. While the Houthis in no way resemble the leftist PFLO in ideology or revolutionary practice, the forces gathered against them have a great deal in common. ...............

Saudi Arabia and Israel are the two most malign influences in the Middle East. In a region blighted by (mostly western-backed) dictatorships, these two regimes stand out because of their influence. They are what I have termed, the permanent counter-revolution.

President Obama has pointed to Yemen as a model for the U.S.'s counter-terrorism strategy. But now, an anti-American rebel group known as the Houthis has ousted the president and thrown the country into turmoil. As a Saudi-led military campaign bombards Yemen, FRONTLINE in conjunction with BBC Arabic brings this special report from inside the war zone.

On 21 April 2015, the Saudi-led war coalition of Arab states announced that “Operation Decisive Storm,” the military campaign against Yemen that started on 25 March, had transitioned to a new, more peaceful phase, codenamed “Operation Restore Hope.” Shortly thereafter, Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi delivered his first speech to the nation from exile in Saudi Arabia, repeating many of the same accusations against, and ultimatums to, the Houthis. The bombing resumed mere hours after the coalition’s announcement and, more than a week later, it shows no signs of slowing. It seems that little has changed except for the branding of the war. But what this new phase has confirmed is that any of Saudi Arabia’s attempts at “peace” in Yemen—whether under the guise of “Operation Restore Hope” or otherwise—will likely be more violent and permanent than its current war.

More than 6 million people in Yemen are on the verge of starvation, Oxfam warned on Tuesday, adding that months of war and a blockade on imports were pushing an additional 25,000 people into hunger every day.
One in two of Yemen's people - nearly 13 million - are now struggling to find enough to eat, the aid agency said.
"As the warring parties continue to ignore calls for a ceasefire, the average family in Yemen is left wondering when their next meal will be," Oxfam's Yemen country director Philippe Clerc said.
Nearly 4,000 people have been killed and more than 1.2 million displaced in a conflict between Houthi rebels and forces loyal to exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Four fifths of the population need help, the United Nations says.
Oxfam said the number of hungry people had risen by 2.3 million to 12.9 million since March, when a Saudi-led coalition backing Hadi began bombarding the Houthis and imposed a blockade in a bid to cut off arms supplies.

It was the first reported deployment of ground troops there by Egypt, which has one of the Arab world's strongest armies.

The United States may be directly responsible for more civilian deaths in Yemen than al-Qaida over the past year, according to a grim United Nations report released Wednesday.
As many as 40 Yemeni civilians are believed to have been killed by U.S. drone strikes in the war-torn nation over the past 12 months, the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) concluded in its latest report.

More than 114,000 people have fled war-torn Yemen, and the figure could reach at least 200,000 by the end of 2016, aid officials said Tuesday.
Fighting escalated in March when Saudi-led airstrikes began targeting Yemen's Huthi rebels to defend embattled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.
"Close to 70,000 people fleeing the crisis have arrived in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan," the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement.

On 7 October, it was reported that Yemen's Houthi rebels and their ally, former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, had accepted a peace plan brokered by the UN in Oman, as well as Security Council resolution 2216 of April this year. Saleh reiterated his acceptance in a TV interview five days later, adding that he was willing to quit his leadership of Yemen's largest party, the General People's Congress (GPC), to facilitate an end to the conflict.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's chief spokesman Stephane Dujarric was right to describe this as "an important step," and Yemen's internationally recognised government and its allies should have acknowledged it as such. They had been insisting all along that an end to the conflict must be based on prior acceptance of resolution 2216.
The resolution reaffirmed the "legitimacy" of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, expressed alarm at the Houthis' "military escalation," and condemned "in the strongest terms" their "ongoing unilateral actions".
It also demanded that the Houthis "immediately and unconditionally ... end the use of violence; withdraw their forces from all areas they have seized, including the capital Sanaa; relinquish all additional arms seized from military and security institutions," and "refrain from any provocation or threats to neighbouring states". Rejection
As such, acceptance of the resolution by the Houthis and Saleh meets the demands of the government and its allies, and is tantamount to a victory for the latter. It also represents the most important opportunity to end the conflict since it began. Unfortunately, however, the reception has been wholly dismissive.
"There must be an announcement of willingness to implement all articles of the resolution without any changes," said Hadi's press secretary, Mokhtar al-Rahbi. "We are ready to go to any talks after a clear acceptance of the implementation of the UN resolution."
However, it should suffice that acceptance came in the form of a Houthi letter to Ban and a TV announcement by Saleh. Both were clear, and most importantly acceptance was in writing and to the mediating party. Al-Rahbi claimed that the acceptance had come with conditions, but Reuters, which said it had seen the letter to Ban, reported that the Houthis "fully accepted" resolution 2216.
Given past experience, it is understandable why the Yemeni government has described the acceptance as a "manoeuvre". The Houthis have reneged on previous agreements, which set the stage for the current conflict, and Saleh has continued to play spoiler since a popular revolution led to his overthrow almost four years ago.

After all the bloodshed witnessed over recent months, a return to power for President Hadi seems unthinkable
On my way to Sanaa airport in September, leaving Yemen after a reporting trip, I watched from my car window as one airstrike after another landed across the desolate landscape around me. Looking back, my heart ached for the family I was leaving behind, for the starving children I had met on Sanaa’s streets, for Khadija Al-Bayna, in Hajjah, who had lost her teenage sons and breadwinners when a strike hit the water-bottling plant where they worked, for Fareed Shawky who pleaded: “Don’t bury me, Don’t bury me” as he was being treated for injuries sustained after Houthi shelling… http://www.middleeasteye.net/essays/yemen-s-tug-war-50700445

Secret cable and Dutch government official confirm that Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen is partly motivated by an ambitious US-backed pipeline fantasy
Nearly 3,000 civilians have been slaughtered and a million displaced in Saudi Arabia’s noble aerial bombardment of Yemen, which is backed by the United States and Britain.
Over 14 million Yemenis face food insecurity – a jump of 12 percent since June 2015. Out of these, three million children are malnourished. And across the country, an estimated 20 million people cannot safely access clean water.
The Saudi air force has systematically bombed Yemen’s civilian infrastructure in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. An official UN report to the Security Council leaked last month found that the Saudis have “conducted airstrikes targeting civilians and civilian objects … including camps for internally displaced persons and refugees; civilian gatherings, including weddings; civilian vehicles, including buses; civilian residential areas; medical facilities; schools; mosques; markets, factories and food storage warehouses; and other essential civilian infrastructure, such as the airport in Sanaa, the port in Hudaida and domestic transit routes.”
US-made cluster bombs have been dropped on residential areas – an act that even the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon tepidly concedes “may amount to a war crime”. http://www.middleeasteye.net/essays/saudi-war-yemen-oil-pipeline-empowering-al-qaeda-1386143996

The credibility of the United Nations is on the line after it shamefully caved in to pressure to remove the Saudi Arabia-led military coalition from the UN’s list of states and armed groups that violate children’s rights in conflict, Amnesty International said today.
Last night a spokesperson for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced the change to the list published on 2 June as part of an annual report by his Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. The move was a direct result of diplomatic pressure from Saudi Arabia, angry at the UN’s conclusion that coalition operations had led to the death and suffering of children in the armed conflict in Yemen.
“It is unprecedented for the UN to bow to pressure to alter its own published report on children in armed conflict. It is unconscionable that this pressure was brought to bear by one of the very states listed in the report,” said Richard Bennett, Representative and Head of Amnesty International’s UN Office. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2016/06/un-shameful-pandering-to-saudi-arabia-over-children-killed-in-yemen-conflict/

Almost a year and a half into Saudi Arabia’s U.S.-backed bombing campaign in Yemen, the humanitarian toll has become so extensive that the International Committee of the Red Cross has taken the unusual step of donating entire morgue units to Yemeni hospitals.
“The hospitals were not able to cope,” said Rima Kamal, a Yemen-based spokesperson for the Red Cross. “You could have more than 20 dead people brought into one hospital on one single day. The morgue capacity at a regular hospital is not equipped to handle this influx of dead bodies.” https://theintercept.com/2016/08/25/the-death-toll-in-yemen-is-so-high-the-red-cross-has-started-donating-morgues-to-hospitals/

Naseem al-Odaini, an activist in Taiz, has been monitoring Houthi violations in the war-torn Yemeni city since April 2015, using her phone and notebooks to take photos and document civilian casualties.
Working with more than 20 women and men volunteers within the initiative "Love it", she helps reveal violations to the world through social media and various media outlets.
Three months ago, however, noted Islamic scholar Abdullah al-Odaini issued a fatwa (religious ruling), forbidding female and male activists from working together, arguing that Islam prohibits the free mixing of women and men.
The fatwa has created resentment and fear among activists, who reply that they too are supporters of the anti-Houthi Popular Resistance, the same as Abdullah al-Odaini, who is also a member of the Yemeni parliament and imam of Taiz's al-Noor mosque. http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/fatwa-forbids-work-female-activists-taiz-112812818

"Children are at a particularly high risk if the current cholera outbreak is not urgently contained, especially since the health system in Yemen is crumbling as the conflict continues." http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/cholera-outbreak-hits-war-torn-yemen-unicef-946202631
The American-made catastrophe in Yemen
For a generation of Americans old enough to remember, the Korean conflict is often dubbed the “forgotten war”. Where Hollywood has lionised or contextualised those who fought in the Second World War and Vietnam, the nearly 2 million Americans who fought on the Korean peninsula in the early 1950s have largely been airbrushed from history.
Fast forward 60 odd years, and Americans find themselves participating in yet another forgotten war: Yemen.
Where the unfolding tragedy in Syria has grabbed media attention in the US over the course of the past five years, at least intermittingly, America’s participation and contribution towards alleged war crimes and the unmitigated humanitarian crisis in Yemen is yet to have even grabbed the attention of CNN’s scrolling news ticker. http://www.middleeasteye.net/columns/american-made-catastrophe-yemen-2117766545
BAE in talks with Saudi over multi-billion pound deal as Yemen war continues
BAE Systems is in discussions with Saudi Arabia over a multi-billion pound arms contract, according to an announcement on Thursday.
The deal is likely to be controversial, taking place against a backdrop of a Saudi-led military campaign against Houthi rebels in Yemen which has been accused of helping to create a humanitarian disaster in the impoverished country.
"Discussions between BAE Systems, the UK government and the Saudi Arabian government are progressing to define the scope and terms of the next five-year Saudi-British Defence Co-operation Programme," BAE told the Stock Exchange on Thursday.
British MPs last month called for an arms ban to be imposed on Saudi Arabia pending an investigation of alleged war crimes and human rights abuses in Yemen. Gangsters in war-torn Yemen ensnare women to do their dirty work
Teenager Asma Mahboob was alone in the family home on that fateful Thursday night in September.
The rest of her family, who live in Aden, Yemen, were away at a neighbour’s wedding; Asma, 13, had chosen to stay at home. Her father, Mohammed, had told his daughter not to open the door to strangers as there had been talk in the Crater district, where they live, of thieves operating in the area.
Then there was the knock at the door.
Asma recognized the voice as a friend of her mother’s, someone from a poor family whom her mother used to help. And it was early – only 7pm. The young teen let the woman into the home and then went to make them both tea.
It was while Asma was distracted that the visitor opened the door - and let in fellow gang members who stormed the family home.
The thieves, who Mohammed believes had been watching the house, tied the teenager up before escaping with jewelry valued at about YR100,000 ($400), $160 hidden in a clothes cupboard and other belongings valued at $80. http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/how-women-war-torn-yemen-are-being-ensnared-criminal-gangs-and-society-1837260771

U.S. and U.K. Continue to Actively Participate in Saudi War Crimes, Targeting of Yemeni Civilians
From the start of the hideous Saudi bombing campaign against Yemen 18 months ago, two countries have played active, vital roles in enabling the carnage: the U.S. and U.K. The atrocities committed by the Saudis would have been impossible without their steadfast, aggressive support.
The Obama administration “has offered to sell $115 billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia over its eight years in office, more than any previous U.S. administration,” as The Guardian reported this week, and also provides extensive surveillance technology. As The Intercept documented in April, “In his first five years as president, Obama sold $30 billion more in weapons than President Bush did during his entire eight years as commander in chief.” https://theintercept.com/2016/10/10/u-s-and-u-k-continue-to-actively-participate-in-saudi-war-crimes-targeting-of-yemeni-civilians/

Obama Is Killing Yemen: A Yemeni Journalist Speaks Out After U.S.-Backed Bombing Strikes Funeral
On Sunday, thousands of Yemenis gathered at the United Nations building in Sana’a calling for an international investigation into the U.S-backed Saudi assault on a funeral. The attack was carried out with warplanes and munitions sold to the Saudi-led coalition by the United States. The U.S. Air Force continues to provide midair refueling to Saudi warplanes. According to the U.N., more than 4,000 civilians have been killed and over 7,000 injured since the Saudi-led coalition bombing began last year. Airstrikes have reportedly caused about 60 percent of the deaths. We go to Sana’a to speak with Yemeni journalist Nasser Arrabyee and Sarah Leah Whitson of Human Rights Watch. https://www.democracynow.org/2016/10/11/obama_is_killing_yemen_a_yemeni?utm_source=Democracy+Now!&utm_campaign=f11427f5f0-Daily_Digest&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_fa2346a853-f11427f5f0-190167973

Nearly 2.2 million Yemeni children are acutely malnourished, victims of the near-collapse of the healthcare system during two years of escalating conflict, UN children's agency UNICEF said on Tuesday.
At least 462,000 are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, as food supplies have been disrupted by the devastating war between the Saudi-backed government and Shia Houthi rebels, the agency said.
Saada province, a rebel bastion in the far north, has the world's highest stunting rate among children with eight out of 10 children affected in some areas, it added.
"Malnutrition in Yemen is at an all-time high and increasing," said UNICEF's acting country representative, Meritxell Relano. http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/more-two-million-yemen-children-acutely-malnourished-says-un-504372373

Yemen Vote - The Responsibility To Protect Profits
At first sight, compassion appears to loom large in 'mainstream' politics and media. When the American and British governments target countries like Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, 'compassion' is always at or near the top of the agenda.
Time and again, the cry from the political system is: 'We Must Do Something!' 'We' must save Afghan women from the 'Medieval' Taliban. 'We' must save Kuwaiti new-borns flung from their incubators by Iraqi stormtroopers. 'We' must save Iraqi civilians from Saddam's shredding machines. 'We' must save civilians in Kosovo from Milosevic's 'final solution'. http://medialens.org/index.php/alerts/alert-archive/2016/830-yemen-vote-the-responsibility-to-protect-profits.html

The main goal of 21-year-old Ibrahim, youngest of five siblings and the only one to reach university, is to complete his degree and secure a better future.
That, and staying alive.
To pay for his university studies, Ibrahim, who asked that his real name not be revealed, must brave the sniper-infested streets of Taiz city as a part-time soldier in Yemen's bitter civil war. http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/fighting-degree-yemens-taiz-street-street-180021840

Exclusive: Britain's 'confused' Yemen policy is increasing the risk of UK terror attack, warns Andrew Mitchell
Britain is increasing the likelihood of a terrorist attack on UK soil if the Government does not rethink its "confused" policy in Yemen, a former International Development Secretary has warned.
Andrew Mitchell, speaking on his return from Yemen, said Britain's support for the Saudi Coalition "will stoke a further generation of terror" and lead to "threats to Europe." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/16/exclusive-britains-confused-yemen-policy-increasing-risk-uk/

An air strike by a Saudi-led coalition on a market in Yemen killed 20 civilians and six rebels on Friday, medical and military sources said.

Yemen war turns two
This month the war in Yemen is 2 years old. It pits a coalition of mostly wealthy Arab countries, led by Saudi Arabia, supporting President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi's government against a ragged alliance of Houthi Shiite rebels and backers of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who enjoy Iranian support. Despite occasional claims that victory is near by the Saudi-backed Hadi loyalists, there is little prospect for the war to end. The Yemeni people, the poorest in Arabia, are paying a terrible price. http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2017/03/yemen-war-saudi-arabia-two-years-houthi-iran.html
UN warns of catastrophe as 18m face famine in Yemen
Millions of Yemenis are on the verge of starvation the United Nations has warned, as the body said the world is facing its biggest humanitarian crisis since 1945.
