**************************************** Life's What You Make It Can't Escape It Don't Try To Shake It Celebrate It (Mark Hollis/Tim Friese-Greene)
Done. Done. Done. Here's a little track by track run down for you.
..:..:..:..:..:..:..:..:..
THE LETTER We've talked about this one before. It dances, it sings, it'll bring the house down i think.
THREE SISTERS It's loud, it's scary, it's also covered in mandolins, mad baritone howls and a blistering B3.
SUN GANGS Ghostly little number this - written as a kind of unwitting follow-up to Under the Folding Branches.
KILLED BY THE BOOM A narrative concerning the death of a nameless vagabond with "The Dull Eyes Of A Steer And A Lion's Mane" set beneath a wall of guitars that sound like broken lightbulbs and a hammond being smashed to bits.
SIT DOWN BY THE FIRE When it all goes wrong sometimes you have no choice but to just watch it all burn to the ground. That's the general idea anyway. Big and quite, quite beautiful.
LITTLE ELEGY Not sure if this will make it onto the album or not, it's only a minute long and kinda ties the room together nicely.
THE HOUSE SHE LIVED IN Anyone that came to see us play last year may recognise this little number. The story of...well, you should decide that for yourselves. She ain't coming home though I don't think.
IT HITS DEEP As mentioned before, the word 'Libidinous' immediately leaps to mind when attempting to describe this. Music to make love and possibly even build a small fort to.
DESTINED FOR GREAT THINGS Quite a departure for us this one, it reminds me a little of My Bloody Valentine crossed with Noel Coward. Make of that what you will.
SCARECROW Slow and very, very bare, probably the most naked my voice has ever sounded. It's sad, boy is it sad.
LARKSPUR Those who came to our residency at The Enterprise earlier in the year will have had a sneak preview of this one. Originally an hour long we managed to whittle it down to just under 9 minutes. It's about writing, about giving yourself over to it completely and just going fucking barmy. Monolithic, a little scary and, we hope, very good fun indeed.
BEGIN AGAIN What would a Veils record be without the obligatory reflective closer? Sounds like an anchorman realising he left the gas on.
..:..:..:..:..:..:..:..:..
And there it is. We're off to America now, come say hi if you can.
Cheers to all, Click here to see a set of photos from Chicago show.

The Lakeshore Theatre performance was their second in Chicago after US release of 'Nux Vomica' album in 2007. The Veils are currently touring North America with australian musician/songwriter Liam Finn and are getting ready for their already recorded third LP release in March of 2009. Europen & US tour to promote the new album will follow.
We have finished touring for the year but will begin playing some shows in London in January with a tour in Europe The States, Austalia & New Zealand beginning in March.
'veils' sind nicht 'the veils' nur wo the veils dran steht ist auch the veils drin..
Zitat: www.theveils.com
The OTHER other Veils, or, No, we're not playing in Manchester this week.
We knew there was a THY Veils out there, and we’ve never had a problem with mixups with them. But as we found out recently, there is now a band called simply ‘Veils’ who are gigging round England. Last.fm seems to be having a lot of trouble recognising the difference between the two, and fair enough…it’s just a ‘the’. It’s leading to some confusion which we thought might be good to clarify, because the OTHER Veils have all our albums listed on their last.fm page, and we keep getting their gig dates.
So. Basically, we’re sorry, we’re working on it (not in an uppity-lawsuit way), but in the meantime, if last.fm tells you there is a Veils gig on, it’s best to check here or on the myspace – if it aint listed, it aint us.
Though feel free to go along anyway. Maybe they’re good?
There are tour dates coming. I've seen em. Probably nothing definite for a while, people like to....I don't know. Haggle? Change their minds? But what there is at the moment involves Europe, April, and May. Maybe just get out your calendar, or wait to see if you get a 2009 one for Christmas, and run a big gold line through those months with a VEILS? beside it.
It's hot in Australia. And the birds can all imitate mobile phones.
*** TONIGHT 2 February 2009, 14:03
Tonight’s show at Ginglik has been cancelled – icy roads and a near paralysed public transport system are not a good combination for putting on shows. It has been rescheduled for February 9th and your tickets will still be valid – if you do need a refund please contact whoever sold you the ticket and explain it’s not your fault, it’s the snow’s. Crossing fingers for tomorrow.
We are all very proud to announce the completion of our third album titled ‘Sun Gangs’. We went a little quiet over the past month but I assure you there has been much toiling behind the scenes to bring this little bundle of joy to you in the state we intended.
It is an album we are all immensely proud of here in the west London Veils HQ, a record full of twists and turns that we hope will be of use to you in some way or another. The final tracklisting is as follows, it’ll be in shops in April.
***** 1. Sit Down By The Fire 2. Sun Gangs 3. The Letter 4. Killed By The Boom 5. It Hits Deep 6. Three Sisters 7. The House She Lived In 8. Scarecrow 9. Larkspur 10. Begin Again *****
We have been filming some small visual treats which we will put on our website over the next few weeks including acoustic renditions of some of the new songs and two new music videos, one filmed in New Zealand with our dear friend Sean Grattan, and one in London with recent acquaintances the equally wonderful Jane Pollard & Iain Forsyth.
The tidal wave of interviews is to commence soon and I must ask all of you to please consider while reading them that I am by nature a shy and increasingly insular human being that when confronted with a line of heavy questioning will lie stolidly and mercilessly until the threat desists. Thank you, and now let’s go have a lovely year.

Sun Gangs by The Veils - Released: Apr 07 2009
The Veils are Finn Andrews, (vocals, guitar, piano, New Zealand) Sophia Burn, (bass, New Zealand) Dan Raishbrook (guitar, odd noise, England) and Henning Dietz (drums, Germany). Sun Gangs is their third album, and without a doubt their finest to date.
By turns epic, desolate, wildly romantic and anguished, Sun Gangs is a bold and distinctive record described by Finn as “a very modern mixture of prayers, love letters and personal record keeping”. Produced by Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker / British Sea Power / Bark Psychosis) it is their most ambitious record yet ranging from the yearning elegy of ‘Sit Down By The Fire’, to the charred, mantis-like groove of ‘Killed By The Boom’ - this is a record unlike many we are likely to hear this year.
So many stories, words, tones and ideas punctuate its gradually unfolding landscape as that incomparable voice cries and hollers. “’Sit Down By The Fire’ is about watching something collapse, and it being quite pretty to look at,” offers Finn. “’Killed By The Boom’ is possibly about The Wire’s Omar Little. ‘It Hits Deep’ is about being a man, in a bar alone, on a tropical island resort, as the light gets dim and the world goes fuzzy. ‘Larkspur’ is somewhere else entirely.”
“I really wanted to write something that hangs together in perhaps a not so obvious way; not just some collection of singles but a real voyage into something, something strange and unspecific but totally emotionally consuming. It’s also kinda just a break-up record in many ways.”
Finn’s father Barry Andrews was a founding member of the highly influential group XTC in the late 1970s, later going on to tour with the likes of Robert Fripp & Brian Eno, Iggy Pop & David Bowie.
In younger days in Auckland, thousands of miles away from his father, Finn sang at a folk club up a volcano, and sidelined a desire to paint when he began hearing musicians like Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen, Roy Orbison & Bob Dylan - contemplating that there was perhaps more to life than the bleeping Eighties electronica and early days of New Wave which had surrounded his first London foray.
In Sun Gangs The Veils have brought Finn’s early influences full circle, and created a record that truly lives up to the huge promise and talent that they have always exhibited.
The first dates of the Sun Gangs tour are up now. We’ll be filling out the list over the next little while so keep checking back. Links for tickets and directions will be posted in the live section as we get them. - http://www.theveils.com/live -

*** Dutch channel and website 3voor12 have just posted an elevator session (’behind closed doors’) with Finn recorded on March 20th. Finn performs ‘Sit Down By The Fire’ and ‘Sun Gangs’ in the elevator of the Eden Lancaster hotel in Amsterdam.
3voor12 writes:
“In between interviews and a trip back home to London The Veils’ Finn Andrews - for the occasion just with his guitar and without his bandmates’ - luckily had some time left to play two beautiful songs in the elevator of his hotel. The pressing of the elevator buttons, which kept the elevator moving and kept curious people in the hotellobby from getting in, was beautifully intertwined with the songs. fantastic”

We are all very saddened to reveal, as of the end of our current European tour, Henning will be leaving The Veils. As some of you may know, Henning had a baby girl earlier this year and following much pondering on his part he has decided a life almost entirely on the road with us won't allow him sufficient time to be with his daughter. Fair enough really.
We will be joined by our exceptionally talented friend Raife for our tour in America over the summer until a permanent replacement can be found.
Please join us in wishing Henning all the best for the future. We'll miss him to bits.
man könnt glauben, little* sitzt auf seinem keyboard
hast schon ein richtiges sammelsurium zusammen..
Come out tonight, let's go dancing shoot out the lights, the hole distance and throw our souls from tall buildings on broken roads, just like kids Don't give up, just yet..
Come out tonight, let's go dancing shoot out the lights, the hole distance and throw our souls from tall buildings on broken roads, just like kids Don't give up, just yet..
This song was recorded last week in my flat in London in an attempt to extinguish a heavy case of post-American-tour-anxiety. Please freely download and distribute as you wish.
Finn
Turn From The Rain
He married young All rather at his bride's insistence He played it dumb And walked the line of least resistance And paid no mind to this and that nor foney answers Feared going blind Mama's heart and daddy's cancers -
Turn from the rain For all the good it done you Turn from the rain You might as well have gone through
I'll try my hand at another one All things must pass that stand beneath this sun. Oh no!
Come out tonight, let's go dancing shoot out the lights, the hole distance and throw our souls from tall buildings on broken roads, just like kids Don't give up, just yet..

Dear all, we are pleased to announce that our new EP will finally be hitting shelves, both physical and digital, on January 24th 2011. After almost 9 years on Rough Trade we've now set up our own record label Pitch Beast Records as somewhat of an experiment in DIY music distribution. Pitch Beast is the term given to animals used in advertising campaigns, like that Labrador puppy who sells toilet paper. Anyway it seemed appropriate. The 6 songs were recorded at home and produced by Bernard Butler and Finn. We'd be much obliged if you'd pre order your CD on www.theveils.com. You'll receive bonus track Iodine and Iron for your troubles which will not be on the digital release. Here's the finished tracklist:
You've got your feet on the edge and a fire in your breath But once the winter has gone will there be anyone left? Now I can't feel a thing Weird, I can't feel a thing But "Oh what a beautiful world" And "Oh what a wonderful thing!"
It's the first frost.
I want to swim in the ocean, I want a little cheer I want to do The Locomotion, I want another year They just want to get to the top so they can shit to the bottom And if you can't beat 'em baby then fuck 'em, yeah FUCK 'em
It's the first frost.
It wouldn't be as fun without you with me love, you know You wrote my name down in the dirty London snow Said I was never much for all this Christmas cheer Just cross your fingers it's a happy new year.

WOW! Huuuuuge thanks to all of you that have pre ordered our new EP. We're speechless, you guys have made our year. We're putting it out on our own label this time, so we really, really appreciate it. As thanks we've recorded a little winter-song for you all, it's called First Frost, and you can download it for free here. Merry Christm...as and a Happy New Year. Veils x
