Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (also known as the Kurdistan Freedom Hawks, Teyrêbazên Azadiya Kurdistan, or TAK) has released a statement claiming responsibility for the action against Turkish army convoy in capital city Ankara.

TAK said the action that resulted with hundreds of dead members of the Turkish Army was conducted to avenge the defenseless and wounded civilians brutally massacred in basements in Cizre. “Everyone should know that those who ordered the massacre of civilians were responsible for the Ankara incident”, it underlined. The statement also recalled TAK's previously highlighted statement that they would avenge every Kurdish person victimized by attacks.

Was this week's Ankara attack just the beginning?

The car bomb attack that rocked Ankara Feb. 17 killed 28 people, most of them military personnel. About 100 others were wounded. The assailant was also killed.
Three features of this attack were seen for the first time in Ankara. First, a moving vehicle was used for a suicide attack. Its location was also significant: 500 meters from the parliament, 300 meters from the headquarters of the chief of General Staff, 150 meters from the air force command and 100 meters to the quarters where generals reside. It was the first time military and civilian personnel working at the Chief of Staff offices and at air, naval and ground forces commands have been targeted. The question everyone is now asking is whether such an attack could be repeated there or in Istanbul and other major Turkish cities.

Turkey defends Syria’s Islamists by combatting Kurds

Subsequent to the Kurdish advance against Islamist rebels in Syria’s northern Aleppo province, Turkey’s military has launched a fierce offensive on areas held by the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Afrin and Azaz.

The Turkish army bombed with heavy artillery several YPG-held villages near Azaz and Afrin over the past few days, including Menagh, Miremin, Malkiyah, Meranaz, Tannab and Kashtaar. The Turkish operations coincided with mortar shelling by Syria’s wing of al-Qaeda, Nusra Front, on the Kurdish headquarters in the same areas.

Nun ist es offiziell, dass ein weiterer deutscher Internationalist, gestern in Al Shadadi in der Provinz Heseke gefallen ist. Sein Klarname ist Günter Hellstern, sein Kampfname Rustem Cudi. Günter war 55 Jahre alt, hat 30 Jahre bei der Bundeswehr und der Fremdenlegion gekämpft. In dem Film berichtet er, dass er Vater eines Sohnes ist.

End Times for the Caliphate?

The war in Syria and Iraq has produced two new de facto states in the last five years and enabled a third quasi-state greatly to expand its territory and power. The two new states, though unrecognised internationally, are stronger militarily and politically than most members of the UN. One is the Islamic State, which established its caliphate in eastern Syria and western Iraq in the summer of 2014 after capturing Mosul and defeating the Iraqi army. The second is Rojava, as the Syrian Kurds call the area they gained control of when the Syrian army largely withdrew in 2012, and which now, thanks to a series of victories over IS, stretches across northern Syria between the Tigris and Euphrates. In Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), already highly autonomous, took advantage of IS’s destruction of Baghdad’s authority in northern Iraq to expand its territory by 40 per cent, taking over areas long disputed between itself and Baghdad, including the Kirkuk oilfields and some mixed Kurdish-Arab districts.

Am vergangenen Freitag griffen zwischen 23:00 und 0:00 Uhr etwa 200 Dschihadisten des IS die Stadt und Umgebung von Gîre Sipî (kurdischer Name, arabisch: Tall Abyad oder Tal Abjad) an. Die Stadt Gîre Sipî liegt direkt an der türkischen Grenze, die sie von der Kleinstadt Akcakale auf der türkischen Seite trennt. Bei dem Angriff wurden nach Angaben der Nachrichtenagentur DIHA mindestens 15 Zivilpersonen aus einer arabischen Familie durch den IS getötet, die abschließenden Zahlen können jedoch noch weit höher liegen. Nach Angaben der YPG starben dabei mindestens 100 IS Mitglieder.

Turkey is backing a new Kurdish faction within the Free Syrian Army to take back territory from the Islamic State (IS) group and stop the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) from seizing further ground along the Turkish border.

The group, known as the Grandsons of Salahadin after the famed 12th-century Muslim Kurdish leader, has already captured several villages in the IS-controlled border region between Jarabulus and Azaz following Turkish artillery attacks and missile strikes. In response, IS hit the Turkish town of Kilis earlier this month, killing two civilians.

But threats to attack the YPG unless it withdraws from territory seized from opposition rebels during an advance by pro-government forces in northern Syria last month have stoked concerns of a possible “Kurdish civil war”.

Mahmoud Abu Hamza, a Grandsons of Salahadin commander based in Turkey, told Middle East Eye that the group was backed by both the US and Turkey and considered itself part of the international coalition fighting IS.

“Turkey doesn't support us with arms. Our arms are American,” he said.

Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (also known as the Kurdistan Freedom Hawks, Teyrêbazên Azadiya Kurdistan, or TAK) has released a statement claiming responsibility for the bomb action that hit Turkish capital Ankara's Kızılay Square on March 13, Sunday.

Accordingly, the action at 18:45 last Sunday was conducted by a TAK unit led by militant Seher Çağla Demir, nom de guerre Doğa Jiyan, the first female militant to carry out an action of self-sacrifice within the ranks of TAK. She has been fighting in the ranks of TAK since 2013 which she joined from North Kurdistan, not any other country as is claimed by some circles.

"Our unit targeted state forces in Ankara, castle of fascism and barbarism, to bring the AKP government that massacred Kurds in Cizre to account on a revolutionary basis. However, the police intervention on our unit which came as it advanced toward the target, resulted in civilian casualties. We therefore voice sadness over the loss of civilians that have no links with those pursuing this dirty war", TAK said, adding that the Turkish state hid the casualties suffered by Turkish military and police forces and brought only civilian casualties forward, as was the case in the action carried out by TAK militant Zinar Raperîn.

TAK said Kurds in Kurdistan were being killed deliberately rather than as an inevitable consequence of the ongoing war, adding; "In the atmosphere that has been created as a result of civilian losses after our action, we hope that the public opinion will understand the pains suffered by the Kurdish people who are being massacred savagely, and whose bodies are burned, displayed and not given to families. Even this savagery alone is a reason for Kurdistan Freedom Falcons to revenge.”

Gestern wurden auf dem Rückweg von den Newroz Feierlichkeiten in Amed/Diyarbakir vier Teilnehmer der Newroz Delegation der YXK (Verband der Studierenden aus Kurdistan) vorübergehend festgenommen. Erst durch Druck der deutschen Botschaft, Anwälten vor Ort und in Deutschland konnte die Freilassung noch am gleichen Abend erwirkt werden.

Die Festgenommen wurde von der türkischen Polizei als Agenten beschimpft, geschlagen und bespuckt. Ihnen wurden türkische Märsche und Gebetsrufe vorgespielt und eine Teilnehmerin wurde wegen ihrer kurdischen Herkunft besonders angegangen.

Die diesjährigen Newroz Feierlichkeiten wurden, bis auf die Feier in Amed, vom türkischen Staat überall verboten und waren schwerer Repression ausgesetzt. Seit Monaten geht der türkische Staat massiv gegen die kurdische Zivilbevölkerung vor, zuletzt mehrten sich Berichte über einen Giftgaseinsatz mit mehr als 40 Toten in Gever/Yüksekova. Alle, die versuchen dieses Vorgehen öffentlich zu machen, werden festgenommen oder ausgewiesen, wie zuletzt die vier Teilnehmerinnen einer Menschenrechtsdelegation aus Hamburg, die ebenfalls auf dem Weg nach Amed bei einem Zwischenhalt des Flugzeugs in Antalya zunächst in Gewahrsam genommen und später nach Deutschland zurückgeschickt wurden.

Newroz und die Lage der Kurden in der Türkei

Große Ereignisse werfen ihre Schatten voraus. Im Falle der Newroz-Feierlichkeiten (Neujahrsfest), die im türkischen Teil Kurdistans am vergangenen Wochenende sowie am Montag begangen wurden, waren es düstere Schatten, die auf bevorstehende schwierige Tage schließen ließen.

Bereits im Vorfeld wurde der britische Akademiker Chris Stephenson wegen des Vorwurfs, die PKK zu unterstützen, des Landes verwiesen. Eine Beobachtungsdelegation im Auftrag der Bundestagsabgeordneten der Partei Die Linke, Ulla Jelpke und Andrej Hunko, wurde in Abschiebehaft genommen. Die Feierlichkeiten waren landesweit weitestgehend verboten, in verschiedenen Orten ging die Polizei gewaltsam gegen Demonstrierende vor. In Istanbul wurde dabei eine Person getötet. Die zentrale Feier in Amed (Diyarbakir, "Hauptstadt" Nordkurdistans) am vergangenen Montag indes war offiziell erlaubt und konnte mit ca. 250.000 Teilnehmenden störungsfrei durchgeführt werden.

Türkei: Der schmutzige Krieg unter Ausschaltung der Öffentlichkeit

Vor dem Internationalen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte wurde ein Antrag auf einstweilige Verfügung wegen der Menschenrechtsverletzungen und Tötungen in Cizre gestellt, berichtet die Informationsstelle Kurdistan (ISKU). Dem Bericht zufolge weist die türkische Regierung die Anschuldigungen zurück mit der Behauptung, "die betreffenden Personen hätten bei einem Gefecht ihr Leben verloren". Zitiert werden Augenzeugen, die dem widersprechen und türkischen Soldaten Hinrichtungen vorwerfen - "Ich zählte sie, genau 9 Personen, sie hatten keine Waffen. Ihnen gegenüber Soldaten, die Waffe auf sie gerichtet, wartend bis alle draußen waren. Plötzlich begannen die Soldaten zu schießen."

Spätestens seit Beginn der 90er Jahre und dem Wiedererstarken der kurdischen Bewegung wurde auch das Newrozfest politisch neu besetzt. Rückgehend auf die Mythologie der brennenden Festung von Dehok steht das Entzünden des Newroz-Feuers als Symbol fuer die Befreiung von jeglicher Gewaltherrschaft. Nach den letzten Jahren des Friedensprozesses stand dieses Newroz wieder unter repressiven Vorzeichen…
